Dorpskerk, Kalverstraat 1, Ouderkerk aan den IJssel (map)
Entrance: free
There might not be any traffic lights in Ouderkerk aan den IJssel, but there is always something to do. On Saturday, September 28th, for example: a disco at the Three Maenen in the evening, and an afternoon concert in the village church, featuring sixteenth-century choral works.
This afternoon concert focuses on the work of Carlo Gesualdo da Venosa. His music was considered experimental in his time. So experimental that it was almost never performed. Only since Stravinsky’s arrangements has there been renewed interest in Gesualdo’s music.
During this concert Cappella Gabrieli will sing six-part motets from Gesualdo’s second book of Cantiones Sacrae. This collection could not be performed for a long time, because two parts were missing. In 2004, Cappella Gabrieli commissioned three Dutch composers to complete these motets. Please come and listen to how wonderfully they have done so.
We will also sing works by Morales. In his music, you can clearly hear what preceded Gesualdo. Finally, Schütz’ music’s bold style is a worthy conclusion to the golden period of a cappella choral music.
