In this concert, which combines polyphony and chromaticism, we put three works by lesser-known composers in the spotlight: Cardoso and Rebelo, both from Portugal and Alonso Lobo, from Spain.

Cardoso's Missa pro defunctis dates from 1625. Its text handling and use of dissonance derived from Palestrina’s style, but his mass also betrays Monteverdi’s (1567-1643) influence. Conversely, Rebelo’s composition uses chromaticism and Gabrieli’s double-choir style to distinguish itself from work by his Portuguese colleagues who adhered to Palestrina’s more conservative style.

Our performance of Rebelo’s Lamentaties will be accompanied by none other than Rotterdam’s city organist and carrilloneur, Geert Bierling.
